Grand Canyon North Rim VacationWinter Road Closures Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 | Day 7 First Stop: Kaibab ForestThe Kaibab Visitor Center is located at the intersection of highway 89A, in Arizona, and highway 67. Stop at the visitors center and see the wonderful display on the California Condor and the geological display of the five layers (steps and risers) of the Grand Staircase. Some of the best views of the Grand Canyon are seen by taking the back roads through the North Kaibab National Forest to the rim of the Grand Canyon. If you go, be sure to see Timp Point (.75 RT mile hike to the point) and if you have time Crazy Jug Point. These are dirt roads and can be impassible when wet. Next Stop: Grand Canyon Tour To get to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon
Suggested North Rim Grand Canyon Trails Cape Royal Trail - Several miles after driving through the check point of the Grand Canyon North Rim, watch for the spur to Cape Royal. The Cape Royal Trail is an easy, paved hike with little elevation change. This trail is good for baby strollers and wheel chairs. If your time is limited in the Grand Canyon and you only have time to hike one trail, then this is the one to choose. This is the best view point at the Grand Canyon. Angels Window - This view point is found along the Cape Royal Trail. The Colorado River can be seen from this view point. If you get the right angle you can see the green water at the Unkar Delta bend. Roosevelt Point - Return to your car and go back down the road the way you came in stopping at the Roosevelt Point Trailhead. This is a .2 mile round trip that is an easy and relaxing walk through the woodlands, but is more of a view point than a trail. Next, drive to the Grand Canyon Visitor Center. There are a few displays at the visitor center, but it is more of a bookstore to buy gifts. Ranger talks will be posted there. Bright Angel Point - The Bright Angel Trail is only a short walk from the lodge and Grand Canyon Visitors Center. The path is a flat gravel trail, weaving down to a view point of the canyon. The elevation at the point is 8148', with a 200' elevation change. The point was named by John Wesley Powell after a character in Milton's Paradise Lost. Looking closely at the rocks around the view point, crinoids fossils can be seen. The view from the point is magnificent. Getting ready for Day 5 - Return to Mount Carmel Junction or stay in Fredonia, Jacobs Lake, the Kaibab or the North Rim Lodge and prepare to Visit the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in the morning. If you want more ... Point Sublime - The scenic, 36 mile round trip to Point Sublime is usually traveled by 4WD rather than on foot. The 270° view at the end of the road is outstanding. The trip begins at the Widforss Trailhead. This view point is one of three rim grand slam views. The other favorite views are Bright Angel Point, Cape Royal, Point Sublime and Toroweap. North Kaibab Trail - Plan on 2 days hiking each direction to complete the North Kaibab Trail from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon all the way over to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. This is the only North Rim trail leading down to the Colorado River. The trail is also enjoyable as a shorter hike to Roaring Springs. Mule rides are available to the springs as well. (435.679.8665) Return back toward Fredonia, Arizona. Toroweap (Tuweep) - Visit the Toroweap section of the Grand Canyon if you would like some real Grand Canyon remote adventure. The main entrance is accessed from either Hurricane, Utah or Fredonia, Arizona along AZ 389, located 8 miles west of Fredonia. A small sign pointing towards the dirt County Road (109) road will say Toroweap 61 miles. Drive slowly along this road or your chances of having a punctured tired increase. The first 30 miles of the road seem harmless but the reputation the road has for puncturing tires is well deserved as I am indeed a victim of it. The first 30 miles are graded regularly and smooth which makes for a lot of sharp, fractured rocks. Make sure you have a spare tire and all the tools needed to change it. A tire plug kit, cigarette lighter and air compressor are a bonus. If you plan to travel at night make sure you have a flashlight. Night travel is slowed by the numerous jackrabbits that run in the path. Be aware that the Tuweep area is open from sunrise to a half-hour after sunset. Watch for rocks that are standing up on end and travel slow over the cattle guards. Brings lots of water and blankets in case you become stranded. This road gets little travel, so be prepared. There are no services during the 5 hour round-trip on the primitive backcountry road. This road may be impassable when wet. After reaching the entrance to Tuweep there are six more miles to drive to get to the dramatic and unimpaired viewpoint. A 4WD will provide a smoother ride over the washboard road, but it is not usually required if the road is dry but high clearance vehicle is mandatory to access the very end to get to the campground and ultimate destination as the rapid viewpoint end. Directions to the Grand Canyon North Rim - From Zion National Park, travel SR-9 to Mt. Carmel Jct., then turn south on US-89 to Kanab. There is only one stop light in Kanab; this is where US-89 changes to SR-89A. Fredonia, Arizona is just a few miles away, across the Utah - Arizona border. Take SR-89A to Jacob lake (36 miles), then take SR-67 to the Grand Canyon North Rim park entrance. North Rim Grand Canyon Location - The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is 85 miles from Mount Carmel Junction, which is located on the east side of Zion National Park. Many who visit the National Parks of Southern Utah add the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to their travel plans and those visiting the North Rim of the Grand Canyon often visit Zion National Park.
