Fossils are common in Mt. Carmel Jct. Crinoids fossils in particular are found here, leaving evidence of the ancient seas from which once covered this magnificent part of Southern Utah.

History - The small town of Mt. Carmel is up the road from Mt. Carmel Jct. Settled in 1865 as Winsor, threats by Navajo and Paiute Indians in 1866 forced the locals to abandon the town. In 1871 it was re-established as Mt. Carmel. Named after a Mountain in Palestine.

The Mt. Carmel Rock Church is a quaint stone building that is now used as a tourist information center. It was constructed in 1890 and remodeled in 1924 after a fire destroyed much of the building. At one time the small building had multi uses such as church, school, dances and public meetings.

Thunderbird History
Jack and Fern Morrison homesteaded the rough land that was located along a gravel road in 1931. Jack died in 1961 and Fern began to build. The beautiful resort you see today at Mt. Carmel Jct. is a monument to her hard work and perseverance. Fern died in 1998, shortly after her 91st birthday. Today Jack and Fern's daughter, two of her grand children and two of her great grand children continue to run the Thunderbird.

Maynard Dixon Country
 Each year The Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts sponsors "Maynard Dixon Country" - an annual art invitational featuring the works of 15-20 nationally-known artists. This three day event is held at the Maynard Dixon Art Studio in Mt. Carmel. Call 1-801-533-5330 for more information.

 

Directions to Zion National Park

From the North: Travel I-15 south, past Beaver. exit on Hwy 20. Follow US-89 to Mount Carmel Junction. Take SR-9 to Zion's east entrance.
From Arizona: Travel US-89A through Fredonia, Arizona and Kanab Utah. Follow US-89 to Mount Carmel Junction. Take SR-9 to the east park entrance.
From the South: Travel I-15 north. Take exit 16 and travel through Hurricane to LaVerkin. Continue on SR-9 to the south entrance of the park. SR-9 through Zion National Park is always open and is also called the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway. See restrictions for RV's.
