Red Canyon hoodoos are unique in appearance and organization as vastly different from Bryce Canyon and Cedar Breaks. In Red Canyon the numerous red hoodoos line the road instead of filling an amphitheater.
Directions to Red Canyon
Red Canyon is a section of Utah's Dixie National Forest located along Scenic Byway 12, just 13 miles from Bryce Canyon National Park. Passing through this hoodoo laden section of the forest is required to get to Bryce Canyon from the west.
Red Canyon's Visitor Center: The Red Canyon Visitor Center was completed in the winter of 2004 and is located along Highway 12 as the main center along Scenic Byway 12 to provide information on the road, hiking, ATV trails, 4WD trails, horse trails and the beautiful paved bike trail that runs through Red Canyon. There are some fun hikes in Red Canyon including Birds Eye Trail - a moderate .8 mile hike that takes hikers up close to red rock formations. The 3 mile Losee Canyon Trail travels past select rock formations. The seasonally opened visitor center is located right on Scenic Byway 12 - phone 435-676-2676
Entry fee: As part of Dixie National Forest, rather than a National Park or Monument, there are no entry fees to drive through or hike in Red Canyon.
Camping: There are 37 campsites equipped with picnic tables, fire pits, tent pads, water, toilets, showers, dump station and garbage disposal. Dogs are welcome if on a leash. The seasonal Red Canyon Campground is shaded by ponderosa pines, junipers and Douglas fir. The campground usually closes early October with possible open early May.
Lodging and services are available on the gorgeous east side of Zion National Park, where guests are close to Zion National Park (12 miles), Bryce Canyon National Park (60 miles), Cedar Breaks National Monument (45 miles), Coral Pink Sand Dunes (12 miles), and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon (85 miles). It's where city traffic is absent and the skies are bright and clean.
