Grand Canyon HistoryThe Paiute Indians called the Grand Canyon, "Kaibab" or "Mountain Lying Down." The Spanish called it "Gran Canon," and John Wesley Powell dubbed it the "Grand Canyon" in 1872. The Grand Canyon area was declared a national monument in 1908 and then declared a national park on February 26, 1919. A combination of public interest and backing by President Theodore Roosevelt led to the decision to grant the are Grand Canyon National Park. In 1975 park was enlarged to include Marble Canyon and parts of Glen Canyon and Lake Mead. Tuweep is a unique and gorgeous part of the park, and as can be seen in this photo, it offers one of the best views from any part of the canyon. Situated on the Kaibab Plateau at elevations between 8000' and 9100', is the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, which offers the cool solitude of isolated meadows and forests. Life on the North Rim is brimming with variety and hiking trails and animal-lifefrom the unique Kaibab Squirrel, an icon of the North Rim, to the restoration of the California Condor. The original "Grand Canyon Lodge" was built in 1928 but burned down in 1932, and then a new lodge was built in 1937, and this time with a grand window that overlooks Bright Angel Point. Back in the 1930s the lodge employees greeted guests, singing to them as they pulled up to the lodge in the white motor company bus and then entertained the public by singing and dancing each night. There is a daily Ranger talk on the human history of the Grand Canyon held at Walhalla Point at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The Ranger will tell about the first people that are believed to have inhabited the Grand Canyon. Directions to the Grand Canyon North Rim - From Zion National Park, travel SR-9 to Mt. Carmel Jct., then turn south on US-89 to Kanab. There is only one stop light in Kanab; this is where US-89 changes to SR-89A. Fredonia, Arizona is just a few miles away, across the Utah - Arizona border. Take SR-89A to Jacob lake (36 miles), then take SR-67 to the Grand Canyon North Rim park entrance. North Rim Grand Canyon Location - The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is 85 miles from Mount Carmel Junction, which is located on the east side of Zion National Park. Many who visit the National Parks of Southern Utah add the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to their travel plans and those visiting the North Rim of the Grand Canyon often visit Zion National Park.
