Point SublimePoint Sublime, on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, is one of the most breathtaking vistas anywhere in the Grand Canyon! The remoteness of this area makes it less frequented than other scenic views in the park. However with a 4WD vehicle, one can drive literally onto the point and enjoy the splendor! Point Sublime Photos -Point Sublime Map Approximate driving time: 2 hours each way from AZ-67 Distance: 18 miles each direction (Total of 36 miles on dirt road) Driving Directions from Fredonia Arizona: Drive South on US-89 from Fredonia to Jacob Lake. From Jacob Lake turn right onto AZ-67 and drive approximately 42 miles, looking to the right for the turnoff to the Widforss Trailhead. Be sure to have emergency equipment in your vehicle in case car problems arise. Pack a spare tire, a jack that works, sleeping gear, food and water in case the unforeseen occurs. The drive is 18 miles on a reasonably maintained dirt road, however there are sections that may be rugged. Most of the drive is done through forested landscape and affords little in the way of vistas, but it is a fun drive. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the Kaibab Squirrel and the pine cones they drop to the ground! From the Widforss Point Trailhead parking lot Travel west on the dirt road for .3 miles to a "Y" intersection and turn left to the Point Sublime primitive road. The road travels through forest and then eventually into a large clearing. At the clearing there is a road that branches to the left or right. Take the right. Continue through the long clearing which ends and the remainder of the trip will be in the forest. At 10.7 miles there is a pullout on the right which affords a nice viewpoint into Crystal Canyon. Far below notice the many "temples" rising from the canyon floor. To the south offers a chance to walk out on a limestone table perched far above the canyon below. At 11.3 miles another intersection is encountered; a right at this junction goes to Fire pit Swamp Point and a left turn continues to Point Sublime. Just .5 miles after the junction another pull-out, on the left, offers some more picture-taking opportunities.
Continue on the path - The next 6 miles of travel is done on a better surface and becomes part of the peninsula that Point Sublime is connected to. Soon the pines and firs give way to pinons, juniper and desert cactus as the road leads to what now becomes the obvious Point Sublime table top plateau. The road will continue for nearly .5 mile and end at the southern-most tip of Point Sublime. There are pinon-shaded picnic tables near the end. However the immediate 270 degree view will mesmerize; eating and resting will become secondary. There is even a small slice of the Colorado River visible to the south. This tabletop point is ideal for picnicking and even camping with the proper permit. Remember that the road is rough in places and easier to drive in daylight, so take into consideration the time of day and time required for returning to SR-67.
Directions to the Grand Canyon North Rim - From Zion National Park, travel SR-9 to Mt. Carmel Jct., then turn south on US-89 to Kanab. There is only one stop light in Kanab; this is where US-89 changes to SR-89A. Fredonia, Arizona is just a few miles away, across the Utah - Arizona border. Take SR-89A to Jacob lake (36 miles), then take SR-67 to the Grand Canyon North Rim park entrance. North Rim Grand Canyon Location - The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is 85 miles from Mount Carmel Junction, which is located on the east side of Zion National Park. Many who visit the National Parks of Southern Utah add the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to their travel plans and those visiting the North Rim of the Grand Canyon often visit Zion National Park.
