Easy Family Hikes: Grand Canyon North Rim

Bright Angel Point: .05 miles round trip
This trail or easy walk is located near the Grand Canyon Visitors Center and Grand Canyon Lodge. In the Grand Canyon the view seems to go on forever and when standing along the rim at this viewpoint it is no exception. Have the kids look closely around the rocks at the view point where crinoids fossils can be seen. Bring the kids at sunset and you will be rewarded with smiles on their faces.

From the Cape royal trail turn off at Angels Window. This easy hike is one mile from the Cape Royal Road through a forested ravine of Ponderosa pine and Douglas Fir. The trail leads past a small ancient Anasazi granary and culminates at an overhang with water seeping down.

Cape Royal Trail: .6 mile round trip
From atop the Kaibab Plateau, Unkar Creek Canyon is viewed below. The trail is paved and excellent for baby strollers and wheel-chairs. The viewpoint offers the most speculator views of the Grand Canyon. This is an easy hike that the entire family will enjoy. Angels Window along the way will delight the child in all of us.

Roosevelt Point Trail: .2 mile round trip
A easy and relaxing short walk through the woodlands that is more of a view point than a hike, but the the Canyon below is magnificent and it is a good place to get out and stretch the legs on the way to the Cape Royal Trailhead.

Kaibab Forest Kids Program: Be sure to stop at the Kaibab National Forest Visitors Center located at the junction of Scenic Byway 89A and 67. The Kaibab Visitors Center offers an education program for the kids. Badges and other trinkets are often handed out to kids at the Kaibab Forest Visitors center upon completion of a worksheet about the displays in the center.

to do at the
Grand Canyon North Rim
The Grand Canyon Junior Ranger Program offers a different level of education for three separate age groups in their Junior Ranger Program: Ravens for ages 4-7; Coyotes for ages 8-10; and Scorpions for ages 11-14. Bring your Children to the Grand Canyon Visitors Center where they will be given a booklet. The children are instructed to hike and experience the Grand Canyon while filling out the booklet throughout the day. It is required that they also attend at least one ranger talk or walk. There are usually four a day at the North Rim starting at 8 am, then again at 2 pm, 3 pm and 8 pm. Remember Arizona time does not change so check your watches to make sure you are on the same time as the rangers. When the tasks are complete the children return to the ranger at the visitors center to get a badge and report what they have done.

Directions to North Rim Grand Canyon: From Zion National Park, take on U-9 through the park to Mt. Carmel Jct. Turn south on US-89 to Kanab. There is only one stop light in Kanab; this is where US-89 changes to ALT 89. Fredonia, Arizona is 6 miles. In Fredonia take 89A to Jacob lake (36 miles), then take AZ 67 to the Grand Canyon North Rim park entrance.

 Lodging Zion National ParkLodging and services are available on the gorgeous east side of Zion National Park, where guests are close to Zion National Park (12 miles), Bryce Canyon National Park (60 miles), Cedar Breaks National Monument (45 miles), Coral Pink Sand Dunes (12 miles), and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon (85 miles). It's where city traffic is absent and the skies are bright and clean.

North Rim Grand Canyon Location - The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is 85 miles from Mount Carmel Junction, which is located on the east side of Zion National Park. Many who visit the National Parks of Southern Utah add the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to their travel plans and those visiting the North Rim of the Grand Canyon often visit Zion National Park.
