Hiking, climbing, canyoneering and even back road exploration in and around Zion National Park takes a certain type of equipment. Hiking, climbing, canyoneering and even back road exploration in and around Zion National Park takes a certain type of equipment. The ideal shoe for canyoneering and hiking on the sandstone in Zion National Park for me was, at that time, La Sportiva. When exploring Zion and the other Southern Utah parks and monuments the right kind of shoe is important to keep you comfortable and safe as you hike, boulder or canyoneer. I usually wore La Sportiva as an ideal shoe that fit my foot well and held up as I scrambled, canyoneering and hiked both on trail with my children and off trails with others my age. The La Sportiva Exum Ridge is or at least at that time was a radical hybrid with suction dot rubber lugs for friction, sticky frixon grip plus the shoe is lightweight and dried quick while I traveled in and out of water. To hike in Zion on slippery sandstone look again for sticky rubber sole even when not canyoneering. There are light boots or trail shoes that offers the support without bulk and weight. If your choice is heavy socks then of course you need a larger boot that you would normally wear. Socks are a personal choice and I always otten for the cooler thin socks that absorb moisture and allow air in and out. Women with very wide feet might want to consider buying the male version of hiking shoes. Hiking socks should keep feet dry and blister free by wicking sweat away from the feet and reduce shoe friction. Synthetic hiking socks are ideal for this, but wool socks are also popular. Choosing a Tent to take backpacking For some the ease of putting a tent together and taking it apart is important and weight and space is a major concern of any backpacker. Keep this in mind when looking for a tent. A tent might seem light in the store, but those pounds add up when backpacking. Keep in mind the seasons you will be using your tent and make sure it has adequate ventilation and waterproofing. A double top will help with condensation.
