Zion National Park Favorite Hikes in and around Zion National Park

Zion National Park shines brightest amid an impressive Southern Utah collection of National Parks and National Monuments as the most visited, hiked, camped, enjoyed entertaining its visitors with vertical enormity opposite of the vast depths of the Grand Canyon of Northern Arizona. Zion National Park is an eight layered sandstone masterpiece of towering cliffs, deep red canyons far different from those of Arizona with attached mesas, buttes and massive monoliths. It took eight-hundred-million years of Earth time to carve and mold Southern Utah and attached Northern Arizona as both make up the grand staircase geology as well as Utah's Cedar Breaks National Monument and Bryce Canyon National Park. While most visitors just travel the vast system of Southern Utah scenic byways, including highway 9 also called Zion-Mt. Carmel Scenic Byway, others jump into slot canyons, trails, routes and backpacking to locate the treasure at the end - often a desert waterfall or high-end viewpoint of expanse to see what cannot be viewed without getting out on your own two feet.

Directions to Zion National Park

From the North: Travel I-15 south, past Beaver. exit on Hwy 20. Follow US-89 to Mount Carmel Junction. Take SR-9 to Zion's east entrance.
From Arizona: Travel US-89A through Fredonia, Arizona and Kanab Utah. Follow US-89 to Mount Carmel Junction. Take SR-9 to the east park entrance.
From the South: Travel I-15 north. Take exit 16 and travel through Hurricane to La Verkin. Continue on SR-9 to the south entrance of the park. SR-9 through Zion National Park is always open and is also called the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway. Restrict RV size

 Drive the grand staircase geology to sit upon the grandest scenery on Earth all bunched together in a small corner of Southern Utah and Northern Arizona held together by short and scenic byways to begin at Zion National Park's south side to find Zion Canyon and zig and zag your way through gorgeous landscaping with charming small communities on their outskirts for restaurants, lodging and even golf. The Zion-Mt. Carmel Scenic Byways leads to the East side of Zion National Park to offer quiet, solitude and as the key to all other attractions, not city, to include Bryce Canyon National Park and nearby Dixie National Forest as Red Canyon, Cedar Mountain and Cedar Breaks National Monument. Scenic byway 89 leads to Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park on the way to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, 85 miles from Mount Carmel Junction, the true heart of the Southern Utah magnificence called parks, monuments and byways. A return trip to Utah and Zion National Park finishes a perfect circle to spend more time in what I consider as the best of all US parks. Hike, camp, backpack, swim, tube, kayak, canyoneer, climb, attend talks, eat and all within Zion Canyon, Kolob Canyons, Kolob Terrace and the main section of Zion National Park as Zion-Mt. Carmel Highways also called Utah Route 9. Zion National Park Scenic Byway -Zion Canyon geology constructed itself to damage the land creating upward stone named long ago as Cathedral Mountain, Temple of Sinawava, Great White Throne, Great White Throne, Angels Landing, Zion Narrows, Weeping Rock, Emerald Pools, Virgin River, Altar of Sacrifice, Mukuntuweap, Hidden Canyon, Castle Dome, Three Patriarchs, Cable Mountain, Watchman, East Temple, West Temple and Checkerboard Mesa on the far East side of Zion National Park. This Zion guide gives insight to both well known, popular and rarely visited areas of Zion National Park and offers windshield travelers the best information there is on scenic byways of Zion Canyon, Kolob Canyons, Kolob Terrace and the main section of Zion National Park from Springdale to Mt. Carmel Junction traveled on the Zion-Mt. Carmel Scenic Byway.
