Zion Canyon is the most secular showcase of geology in all of Utah. The North Fork of the Virgin River has cut through sandstone helping to form the canyon. The main canyon begins at Canyon Junction, an intersection of the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway. The 6 mile road continues to the parking area at the Temple of Sinawava. During the winter, vehicles are free to drive into the canyon, the rest of the year visitors must hop aboard the free Zion Canyon Shuttle. The main road that goes from Zion's south entrance to its east entrance can be traveled by private vehicle year-round. Driving the main road in Zion National Park (Highway 9) is allowed year round.
