Backpacking in Zion Park
A Backcountry permit is required to hike in Zion's backcountry. There are some incredible overnight backpacking trips in Zion National Park, including the East Rim Trail and the Zion Narrows.

Hiking in Zion Park
The Park is divided into three sections: Zion Mt. Carmel Hwy (Scenic Byway 9) Zion Canyon, and the Primitive Kolob Section

Kolob Canyon:
These hikes are located in Zion's primitive back country. To find the Kolob section: leave Zion Park via the South entrance and turnoff into Kolob Canyon from the small town of Virgin. It is about an hour to the trail heads from the main section of Zion Park.

West Rim Trail: This hike is a 14.2 mile moderate hike, starting in Zion Canyon, trekking to the top of the forested Horse Plateau ending at Lava Point in Zion's Kolob Section.

Kolob Arch: This strenuous 14 hour hike ends at the world largest free standing Arch.
The arch spans 310'.

Taylor Creek: This is a 5.4 mile, moderate hike, leading to a double arch alcove.

Back Country Permits
Permits ($5) are required for all overnight trips. Permits may be obtained in advance by calling the Zion Backcountry desk: 1-801-772-0170. Open fires, firearms, and pets are not allowed in the backcountry. Special transports to and from hikes that end far from where the hike began are available from the Zion Visitor Center for a fee. For information on transports and Rock Climbing contact the back country desk.

FYI: Often Zion Park is written incorrectly as: Zions Park, Zion's Park, Zions Canyon, Zion's Canyon, Zions Canyons or Zion's Canyons. There is only one canyon here and the correct way to say it is Zion Park, Zion National Park and Zion Canyon.
