Hiking in Zion National Park
Zion Park is divided into three sections: The Zion Mt. Carmel Hwy (Scenic Byway 9) running through the park, the short drive into Zion Canyon, and the Primitive Kolob Section located near the town of Virgin.
Watchman's Trail:
This is a moderate hike (386 ft ascent) to a viewpoint of the lower Zion Canyon and Oak Creek Canyon. The Watchman is a Red Spire rising 2500'. This is a good early morning, or late evening trail, but mid-day hikes would be hot. The trail is located along Scenic Byway 9. Allow 2 hours for this hike.
The Petroglyphs Trail:
This short walk is located off of a pullout along the Zion Mt. Carmel Hwy (Scenic Byway 9). To find it, look for a pullout with a fence, it is the only one. Walk down to the bottom of the wash, follow the path under the overpass. There are traveled paths towards the monolith to your left, you will see the ancient engravings along the bottom of the cliff. Kids enjoy the petroglyphs and the hike is easy making this a great family hike.
Hiking along Pine Creek.
Pine Creek flows through a canyon in the se section of Zion towards Scenic Byway 9 (Zion Mt. Carmel Hwy) where clear creek joins it. Looking down from the Canyon Overlook trail the creek can be seen and can be entered from the highway beneath the great arch on the south side of the Zion Mt. Carmel Tunnel. This area is deep enough for swimming and diving and following the creek it will turn into a half mile of deep narrows. Only experienced hikers can go deep into pine creek and reppelling equipment is needed do go deep inside.
Zion Park Hiking Tips: Avoid hiking in the hottest part of the day when the sun is directly overhead. It is always a good idea to bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, bug repellant and wear a hat. Keep it light though, remember you have to carry all you bring up the trails.
