Coral Pink Sand Dune: ATV's, 4WD, OHV (Off Highway Vehicles)
The campground at the sand dunes is a favorite hang-out of off-road enthusiast offering clean roomy sites and hot showers. Each night the sandy desert is buzzing with dune buggies, all-terrain vehicles and motorcycles as engines are tuned for the next days play in the soft sand. Note: Park regulations require an eight ft. whip with a flag attached to all OHV vehicles.
ATV Trails
The Coral Pink Sand Dunes offers sandy pink hills suitable as competition hills and some more difficult trail rides in the Moquith Mountain area, Barracks and Elephant Butte Trail. The "Sand Highway" is the target for many who want to ride the Coral Pink Sand Dunes. Look for this path at the east side of the park.
Moquith Mountain Area
North of the dunes is the Moquith Mountain area. Sections of the Moquith Mountain range are for experienced riders only.
South Fork Indian Canyon Pictograph Trail
Another trail choice is the South Fork Indian Canyon Pictographs trail. From the Ponderosa Grove Campground turn south on Sand Springs Road and drive to Sand Springs the follow the path to the Pictograph Site. The trailhead allows for parking.
Elephant Butte ATV Trail
This sandy trail is 16.5 miles and sections run along and across the East Fork of the Virgin River. The trail has some great views and there are some sheer cliff faces along the way. The trailhead is 4 miles south of the Coral Pink Sand Dunes entrance. Utah Junipers are abundant at this elevation and the slick rock found on the east side of Zion Park is abundant. After traveling 8 miles you will reach the turn off for the Barracks Trail and can choose to loop back or continue on to the alternate trail.
Barracks Trail
Start at the Barracks, located one half mile from the Junction of Scenic Byways 9 and 89 in Mount Carmel Junction.This trail travels to isolated areas on its path to an overlook of the Virgin River. Lower tire pressures are recommended for this 5 mile sandy trail. A little over 3 miles into the trail is a campground with views of Zion National Park and White Cliffs. Caution: After the campground the trail gets rough (the return in particular) and is only for experienced riders. This section of trail is 2 miles long.
